Census: U.S. Racial Wealth Gap Widest in Quarter Century A new analysis of U.S. Census data shows the wealth gaps between whites and people of color have grown to their widest levels in a quarter-century. White Americans now have on average 20 times the net worth of African Americans and 18 times that of Latinos. The Pew Research Center has found the median wealth of white U.S. households in 2009...

lowendtheory: I know better than to take it personally, but I gotta say: I’m a little weirded out at the fact that I’m now beginning to be accused of ableism and of playing the more-authentic-activist-than-thou game, and of shitting on online activism, and of saying that all forms of oppression can be reduced to capitalism.   And so I reread what I wrote and I kinda sorta see how it can be read...

barthel: Academic Work Should Be Distributed For Free Right now in academic publishing, what you have is basically a lot of donor- and government-financed nonprofit organizations taking outputs with near-zero distribution costs (electronic journal archives) and selling them to each other. For any one institution, this kind of makes sense. A publisher doesn’t want to give up his fees, which...

Here’s a dancehall set I produced in 2003 for a show at the Access Gallery in Vancouver I played under the name Cowbell, which is a name I use for various electronic music projects. It was on Halloween, too, so I figured dancehall would be a great costume. Of course, I love dancehall, so it wasn’t much of a costume, I guess.

lukesimcoe: “Thus distrust of the serious tone and confidence in the truth of laughter had a spontaneous, elemental character. It was understood that fear never lurks behind laughter (which does not build stakes) and that hypocrisy and lies never laugh but wear a serious mask. Laughter created no dogmas and could not become authoritarian; it did not convey fear but a feeling of strength.” — ...
