towerofsleep: marathonpacks: Kenneth Goldsmith, the founder of UbuWeb, on his digital music “epiphanies” for The Wire: I don’t know about you, but I’ve lost my object fetish. But then again, I was never the type of collector who bought records for their cool covers: the music had to be great. Still, I have 10,000 vinyls gathering dust in my hallway and as many CDs in racks on my wall. I...

Hmmm.
towerofsleep: “‘Underground’, in 2011, means creating an atmosphere of cultural intimacy. So the most apt comparison for where do-it-yourself music is today might be ETSY, the online market for handmade and vintage items. Not only is the economic structure similar— small entrepreneurs selling their wares at fairs or through specialist boutiques but doing most of their business online— but the...

c-d: Here (OCR’d PDF) Walter Benjamin was one of the most original cultural critics of the twentieth century. Illuminations includes his views on Kafka, with whom he felt a close personal affinity; his studies on Baudelaire and Proust; and his essays on Leskov and on Brecht’s Epic Theater…. Of course.

How to make huge university classes more... →
anchorsong: jenniferanne: lukesimcoe: Ontario universities are scrambling to cope with a surge in large classes, trying everything from Hollywood-style podcasts to emailing students their professors’ comments about essays as MP3 files — all to make monster classes seem more up close and personal. No longer just a problem faced by large schools like the University of Toronto, whose...

“Mixing humour with profanity, the website — shitharperdid.ca — crashed under the weight of traffic within hours of its launch Wednesday morning. By Thursday, it passed two million hits, with the average viewer spending four minutes on the site reading through news reports chronicling Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s record.” Our very own Egyptians, or something like that. Well done,...

“A new report shows the degree to which Internet services are marked up: a staggering 6,000 per cent and rising.” Reminds me about learning, once upon a time in a just-pre-Internet-everywhere age, about the grey market for long distance charges: After the system is set up, it was — supposedly — hard for even the telecommunication companies to accurately set prices, particularly with respect to...

The April Fool's joke is on me
towerofsleep: The computer at work crashed with my iPod plugged in and somehow wiped all of its contents. Two of my personal computers have died since I got this iPod, so most of the music on it wasn’t backed up anywhere else. It was about ten times as much stuff as I own in physical formats. Fucking Drag City! How did they do it!?!
